Online Photo Printing Reviews
PhotoWorks Review
Photoworks
is a well trusted name in the photo printing industry. They are a publicly traded company located in Seattle Washington that has been printing photos for consumers for over 30 years now. While they are solely an Internet based company at this point, they spent years prior to the ecommerce revolution delivering millions of prints to their loyal customers. PhotoWorks is rich in photography tradition. They are passionate about photography and will deliver you a very quality product.
Photoworks has been doing prints as long as any of the players in the space and they continue to excel at this practice. They have also recently made a very concerted effort to become a leader in the photobooks space. No one company has proved dominance or superiority with photobooks or photogifts but Photoworks certainly is in the running.
5 out of 5 stars. Photoworks is likely the leader in print quality due to their pre-online history. Refreshingly, they have also put together the site online that is the easiest to use.
Like most players in the space, the standard pricing for 4×6 prints at Photoworks is $.19 cents. They are more upfront and clear than others regarding volume discounts. Even without a coupon, at Photoworks the price can be as low as $.09 for the 4×6 prints.
5 out of 5 stars. Photoworks will deliver you quality prints. They have the highest quality products (photo books and photo gifts included) in the online digital photography space.
4.5 out of 5 stars.
Photoworks has the same, basic turn around time offered by most of the online digital photography players. I have yet to find a player in the space who outperforms the others significantly.
Shutterfly Review
Profile Perspective: Located in redwood California, shutterfly
has been a staple in the online photography space for years. They were
voted PC magazine’s number one provider in the digital photography
space. Money Magazine voted Shutterfly number one in 2006 for online
hard-cover books. They are a very well trusted brand and are certainly
a top three player in the space by most anyone’s standards. Shutterfly
is a pure play online company and understand the ecommerce approach to
photography as well as any of the participants. Shutterfly was founded
in 1999 and remains a privately held company.
Shutterfly certainly has focused on prints but like most other players in the
space, they have made a concerted effort in the last 12 months to
branch into online photo sharing, photo books, greeting cards and photo
gifts. Shutterfly is a one-stop shop at this point for all things
related to online digital photography. Back-of-print messaging is a
unique offer provided by Shutterfly. They remain one of the primary
providers by combining this unique offer with the recently-standard:
free photo sharing and free photo software.
4 of 5 stars.
Shutterfly
has been in the online digital photography space long enough to have
worked out the kinks. They have a very easy to use product.
The standard pricing on the Website for prints is .19 for the 4×6 and $.99 for the 5×7. The prices escalate from here. shutterfly
does not offer the most aggressive pricing in the field. They often
provide up to 15 free prints for activation of new accounts. Photobooks
range in price from $23.99 (cloth photobooks) to $31.99 (leather
photobooks).
4 out of 5 stars. Shutterfly has worked hard for the last 6 years to establish a very high quality product.
3 out of 5 stars. With a focus on quality shutterfly
can tend to be a day slower than their competition. Don’t use
Shutterfly if time is the most critical piece of the equation to you.
Use Shutterfly to work with one of the most established online brands
in online photography and to insure you are satisfied with the digital
prints, the photobooks or the photogifts that you create.
SnapFish Review
Based in San Francisco, snapfish
is owned and operated by HP. The thing to keep in mind when considering
using Snapfish is their tagline: The Best Value in Photography.
Depending on what you are trying to achieve with you online digital
photography, Snapfish can either be ideal or horribly wrong. Snapfish
has focuses on simplicity. They offer all of the standard products
including photo books and coffee mugs but they seem to approach it with
a much more basic approach. To this reviewer, their approach seems a
bit condescending but it should be noted that they prints they create
are very high quality and they can be relied on with such deep pockets
behind them in HP.
snapfish comes out the most aggressively with $.12 prints and 20 free prints
offered directly on their home page. Upon further review and with the
addition of coupons most online digital photography sites cost about
the same. Snapfish focuses more on the online photo sharing components
than their competitors in the space. It appears that on some level they
may be priming to compete with WebShots. Snapfish is also much more
focused on prints and gifts (such as coffee mugs) than photo books. If photoworks and shutterfly
have targeted the new moms and parents, it is safe to say the Snapfish
is targeting the dads and younger men of the world. Keep it simple
could be their motto.
4 of 5 stars. Snapfish has a clean user interface with simple, easy to follow instructions for uploading and selecting your prints and available options.
snapfish is a priced a bit under the other players in this space with a front page offer of $.12 per 4×6 print.
2 of 5 stars. Snapfish
is extremely easy to use and will cost you less than the other
providers but like all things in life, the lower the cost, the lower
the quality. To the untrained eye, the difference may be too small to
see but if you are a photography buff and need the color to be lifelike
then you may want to consider another provider.
4 of 5 stars. Snapfish has kept up with all the other players in the space and will turn your pictures around as fast as any provider aside from RitzPix.
Kodak Gallery Review
kodak gallery has the biggest name in photography behind it. Clearly you are dealing with a best of breed product when using kodak
gallery. Somewhat surprisingly, Kodak has chosen to promote the picture
sharing technology that they have developed over their print business.
Founded in 1999 in Berkeley, California, Kodak used to be named oFoto.
Along with proposing that they provide the highest quality prints
online (a bold but likely true claim) they also provide free online
photo editing tools. This is a very high quality site.
kodak offers 10 free prints with the creation of an account. This is the
lowest offer among the major players. They feel they can be stingy with
the offer as they have the strongest name in the game and because they
offer best-of-breed editing tools for free and a premier photo-sharing
program. Kodak also offers an extremely simple and intuitive upload
process. They win this battle as well with their competitors. They have
the standard offers of mugs and calendars but are far behind photoworks in this category.
4 out of 5 stars.
Ranking just behind snapfish in this category, kodak is very intuitive. The only thing that makes them a bit more
complicated than SnapFish is that their offer is simply much more robust.
4 out of 5 stars. Kodak is the gold standard for online digital photography and this Web Site continues the tradition. If quality prints is your primary concern than you have found your online digital prints provider in Kodak.
3 out of 5 stars.
Kodak is not the fasted player in the space but they are not slow either. Quality takes a bit more time and this is proven to be true once again with Kodak.
RitzPix Review
RitzPix brings an entirely different business model to the online prints space.
Rather than having prints developed and mailed to the user, they
partner with brick and mortar stores to allow users to pick up the
prints in person an hour after uploading the film. Because of this
model, they offer no online photo sharing, photo editing or any thing
related.
With a focus on delivering photos to the user via traditional pick up means, they have focused very little on site features. There are close to none.
3 out of 5 stars. The site is extremely easy to use if you are simply looking to have prints made.
3 out of 5 stars.
For online prints, the quality is middle of the road. For any other tools they are bottom of the barrel.
5 out of 5 stars. RitzPix is the king of kings in the online digital space when it comes to turn
around time. It will not take them weeks, days or even hours. They can
deliver you prints in an hour. If you are in a rush to get your prints,
you have one choice only: RitzPix.
